My First Bookclub by Chat
Years ago when I was invited to lead an online bookclub event hosted by Chatelaine Magazine, my first reaction was “How wonderful!” But that was quickly followed by, “Oh my God I have no idea how to do that!” My extensive workshop and teaching experience had all been 3D. This pre-dated Facebook, Twitter and blogs. I was still on dial-up and my first website lay in the future. I was given the choice of either downloading the software and using it at home, or coming to the magazine’s office and using a computer there beside the moderator’s. Needless to say, I chose the second option. Watching the Chatelaine staff set it up, I realized that it wasn’t as complicated or intimidating as I expected, and I enjoyed the experience as I always do when I meet other people who love books and fine writing. There was an added element, however: the opportunity to connect with people all over the country, even the world, who would otherwise be unable to interact with me on a real time basis. I realized, then, the potential of this form of communication.
The World at my Door
For a busy writer and mom, it hasn't been practical to trot around the city, not to mention the country, speaking to bookclubs. But technology could bring the world to me and me to the world. It was an exciting revelation and it is still just as exciting. My experiences with online chat have connected me with people from the east coast to the west in Canada and the U.S., across Europe, the Middle-East, Australia and New Zealand.
